Etymology
Romanian took "agitat" from French "agité" in the nineteenth century, when the language absorbed many Romance terms to replace older Slavic and Ottoman vocabulary. Both trace back to Latin "agitatus," the past participle of "agitare," meaning to keep moving or stir repeatedly. "Agitare" is itself a frequentative form of "agere," to drive or do, which explains the sense of repeated or ongoing motion still felt in phrases like a rough, choppy sea.
