Etymology
Numerar comes from Latin numerarius, an adjective tied to numerus, meaning number or count. Romanian borrowed it during the nineteenth-century wave of Latin-based neologisms, when the language rebuilt much of its abstract and financial vocabulary from Latin and French models. The word settled into a narrow financial sense: money that is counted out in hand, cash, rather than money held as a bank balance.
