Etymology
Rută entered Romanian from French route, meaning a road or path to be followed. French route itself descends from Vulgar Latin rupta, short for via rupta, literally a broken or cleared way, from the verb rumpere, to break. The word is a modern borrowing rather than an inherited Latin term, part of a wave of French vocabulary that entered Romanian in the 19th century.
