Etymology

Romanian borrowed "traseu" from French "tracé," meaning a route or layout, which is the past participle of "tracer," to trace or draw a line. That French verb goes back to Vulgar Latin, and ultimately to Latin "trahere," to draw or pull. The same Latin root gives English words like "trace," "tract," and "train." Romanian reshaped the French ending into its own "-eu" noun pattern, the same one seen in words like "birou" and "tablou."
