Etymology
Romanian borrowed "absurd" in the 19th century from French "absurde", which traces to Latin "absurdus", meaning out of tune or foolish. The Latin word combines the prefix "ab-" (away, off) with "surdus" (deaf, dull-sounding), so it first described a sound that was jarringly off-key before it came to mean irrational or ridiculous. English took the same Latin root separately, which is why the Romanian and English words look nearly identical.
