Etymology

Mel is a colloquial clipping of melodie, the Romanian word for melody or song. Young speakers shortened the longer word the way English speakers shorten "tune" from a formal term. Melodie itself came into Romanian from French mélodie, which traces back through Latin to Greek melōidia. The clipped form mel is informal and mostly spoken, not written in formal contexts.
