Etymology
Romanian borrowed "egoist" from French "égoïste" in the 19th century, during a period when Romanian intellectuals reshaped the language's vocabulary on French and Italian models. The French word itself was built from Latin "ego" (I) plus the suffix "-iste", coined in the 18th century to describe someone fixated on the self. The word entered ordinary Romanian speech alongside many other French loans of that era.
