Etymology
Romanian borrowed "district" in the 19th century from French "district" and German "Distrikt", both descending from Medieval Latin "districtus", an area under a lord's jurisdiction. That noun comes from the past participle of Latin "distringere", to pull apart or restrain, built from "dis-" (apart) and "stringere" (to draw tight, bind). The same root gave English "strain", "strict", and "stringent".
