Etymology

Onoare entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a deliberate effort to re-Latinize the language's vocabulary, largely through French and Italian models. It traces back to Latin honor, meaning esteem or public office. The word replaced or supplemented older Slavic-derived terms for respect and standing that had been in use during earlier centuries.
