Etymology
Romanian 'a păsa' descends from Latin pensare, meaning to weigh or to consider, itself tied to pendere, to weigh or hang. The sense shifted over time from physically weighing something to a thing weighing on someone's mind, giving the modern meaning of mattering to a person. The verb now survives almost only in the impersonal construction with a dative pronoun, as in nu-mi pasă, I don't care. The same Latin root gave French penser and Spanish and Italian pensar and pensare, all meaning to think.
