Etymology
Romanian borrowed "pacient" from French "patient" in the nineteenth century, during a period when Romanian scholars replaced or supplemented older Slavic-influenced vocabulary with French and Latin terms. The French word itself descends from Latin "patientem", the present participle of "pati", meaning to suffer or endure. The plural "pacienți" is formed with the regular masculine plural ending "-i".
