Etymology

Pută is a vulgar Romanian word for a promiscuous or contemptible woman. It belongs to a small family of Romance words with the same shape and sense: French pute, Italian puttana, and Spanish and Portuguese puta. Linguists do not agree on the ultimate source. One theory traces it to a Vulgar Latin feminine form of putus, meaning a young, pure boy or girl, whose sense turned pejorative over time. Another theory links it instead to Latin putidus, meaning rotten or stinking. Because the two accounts compete and neither is settled, no single root can be stated with confidence.
