Etymology
Albină comes from the Latin alvina, a derivative of alvus, meaning belly or hollow cavity, which also gave rise to the word for hive. Romanian kept this root while other Romance languages moved to different words for bee, such as French abeille and Italian ape, both from Latin apicula. This makes albină a notable case where Romanian preserves an older, otherwise lost Latin term.
