Etymology
Pasiune was borrowed from French passion during the 19th-century modernization of Romanian vocabulary, when many abstract nouns entered the language through French. French passion itself descends from Latin passio, passionis, built on the verb pati, meaning to suffer or endure. The Latin root traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root for enduring pain, the same root that gives Romanian its older, directly inherited word pătimi, to suffer.
