Etymology
Pierdut is the past participle of the verb a pierde, "to lose," which descends from Latin perdere, "to destroy, to ruin, to lose." Perdere itself is built from the prefix per- ("through, thoroughly") plus dare ("to give"), so the original sense was something like "to give away completely" or "to squander." The suffix -ut simply marks the past participle, the same way -at or -it does on other Romanian verbs.
