Romanian borrowed "eternitate" from French "éternité" during the 19th-century push to relatinize the vocabulary, and both trace back to Latin "aeternitas" (genitive "aeternitatis"). The Latin noun comes from the adjective "aeternus", meaning eternal, itself built on "aevum", meaning age or long span of time. The suffix "-itate" is the Romanian reflex of Latin "-itas", used to turn adjectives into abstract nouns.
