Etymology
Poștă entered Romanian through Slavic intermediaries (compare Bulgarian and Serbian pošta), which in turn borrowed it from Venetian Italian posta. The Italian word traces to Latin posita, the feminine past participle of ponere, meaning placed, and referred to relay stations where fresh horses were stationed along a route. The sense shifted from the relay station itself to the system for carrying letters and goods.
