Etymology

Portocal is built on portocală, the Romanian word for the orange fruit, which entered the language through Greek portokali. That Greek word goes back to Venetian portogallo, meaning Portugal, because Portuguese traders were the ones who brought the sweet orange to the eastern Mediterranean in the 1500s. Romanian formed the tree name by shifting the fruit word into the masculine gender, a common pattern for fruit trees in the language.
