Etymology
Prea descends from the Latin preposition per, meaning through or thoroughly. In Vulgar Latin, per could already intensify an adjective, much as the prefix per- does in words like perbonus, very good. Romanian kept that intensifying sense and turned it into a free-standing adverb meaning too or excessively, while also preserving it as a prefix in a small set of formal, church-register compounds.
