Etymology
Preda is built from the prefix pre- (from Latin prae-, "before, forth") attached to the verb a da ("to give", from Latin dare). The literal sense is "to give forth" or "to hand over", which in schools narrowed to "deliver a lesson" and so "teach". It is a native Romanian compound, not a direct loan, and should not be confused with the look-alike English word "predator", which comes from a different Latin root, praeda, "booty".
