Etymology

Romanian borrowed proveni from French provenir during the 19th-century push to re-Latinize the language's vocabulary. French provenir itself descends from Latin provenire, a combination of pro- (forth) and venire (to come). The word entered Romanian alongside many other French and Latin loans that replaced or supplemented older Slavic-derived terms.
