Etymology

Romanian took "radio" from French in the early twentieth century, when the word spread across Europe as the short form of "radiotélégraphie" (wireless telegraphy). The French coinage itself drew on the Latin noun "radius", meaning ray or beam, since early wireless technology was described in terms of radiating waves. Romanian simply adopted the international form as a neuter noun.
