Recompensă entered Romanian in the nineteenth century from French récompense, part of a wave of French and Italian borrowings that reshaped Romanian's learned vocabulary. The French word itself descends from Latin compensare, formed from com- (together) and pensare (to weigh), a frequentative of pendere (to weigh, to pay out). The core sense is a balancing out: something given back to match an effort or a loss.
