Etymology
Regiune comes from French région, itself from Latin regio, regionis, meaning a direction or a bounded stretch of land. The Latin noun derives from regere, to guide or rule in a straight line. Romanian borrowed the word during its 19th-century modernization, when many administrative and scientific terms entered through French.
