Etymology

Republică comes from French république, which comes from Latin res publica, meaning "public thing" or "public matter". Res publica described the state as a shared concern of its citizens, in contrast to a kingdom ruled by one person. Romanian borrowed the word during its 19th-century modernization, when much of the modern political vocabulary came from French.
