Etymology
Romanian borrowed "rest" from French "reste" (or Italian "resto") during the nineteenth-century modernization of the language. That word traces to Latin "restare", meaning to remain or stay behind, built from "re-" (back) and "stare" (to stand). So "rest" is a Romance-era addition to Romanian, not a word inherited straight from spoken Latin in the region. Today it covers both the abstract sense of a remainder and, in shops, the coins handed back after a purchase.
