Etymology
Deloc fuses the preposition de ("of, from") with loc ("place"), which comes from Latin locus. The two-word phrase de loc once meant something like "of a place" or "on the spot," and Romanian still keeps that literal sense in phrases such as e de loc din Cluj ("he is originally from Cluj"). Used constantly in negative sentences, the fused form deloc drifted from a spatial meaning to the abstract sense "not at all."
