Etymology
Romanian borrowed "rol" from French "rôle" in the 19th century, during a period when Romanian absorbed many French words for modern civic and cultural life. The French word originally meant a roll of parchment or paper on which an actor's lines were written, and it came from Latin "rotulus", a diminutive of "rota" (wheel). Over time the meaning shifted from the physical scroll to the part an actor performs, and then to any function a person or thing carries out.
