Etymology
Rulă entered Romanian as a technical term for the grooved wheel that a rope, cable, or chain runs over in a pulley system. It comes from German Rolle, meaning roll, reel, or pulley, which reached Romanian through the industrial and mining vocabulary shared with Transylvania and the Banat under Austro-Hungarian influence. German Rolle itself traces back through Latin rotula, a diminutive of rota, meaning wheel.
