Etymology

Sarcină comes directly from Latin sarcina, the pack or bundle a soldier carried on the march. The sense broadened from a physical load to any duty or burden one must carry out, and in Romanian it also came to mean pregnancy, the load a woman carries, and later, in physics, electric charge. Romanian kept the word through direct inheritance from Latin, unlike many neighboring languages that replaced it with other roots.
