Etymology
"Stim" is the diacritic-free spelling of "știm", the first-person plural present form of the verb "a ști" (to know). This verb descends directly from Latin "scire" (to know), making Romanian unusual among Romance languages, since French, Italian, and Spanish replaced the everyday verb for "to know" with reflexes of Latin "sapere" instead. The Latin consonant cluster "sc" before a front vowel regularly shifted to "șt" in Romanian, the same change seen in the borrowed noun "știință" (science, from Latin scientia).
