Știut is the past participle of a ști, "to know", a verb Romanian inherited straight from Latin scire. Most other Romance languages built their "to know" verb from Latin sapere instead (French savoir, Italian sapere), so Romanian's ști is an outlier. Latin scire itself goes back to the Proto-Indo-European root for cutting or separating, the idea being that to know something is to distinguish it clearly from other things.
