Etymology

Îl comes from the Latin accusative pronoun illum, the object form of ille, meaning "that one" or "he". Romanian kept this Latin case system almost intact for its personal pronouns, unlike most other Romance languages. Over time illum shrank to a single clitic consonant that must lean on a nearby verb, and Romanian added a prosthetic "î-" so the word could stand at the start of a sentence.
