Afară comes from the Latin phrase ad foras, meaning toward the doors or out of doors. Foras was the accusative plural of foris, door or gate, used adverbially to mean outside. Romanian fused the preposition ad with foras into a single word, a pattern also seen in other Romanian adverbs built from Latin prepositional phrases.
