Etymology
Romanian took "scandal" from French "scandale", which goes back to Late Latin "scandalum" and ultimately Greek "skándalon", a trap or stumbling block. In New Testament Greek the word extended to mean a cause of moral offense, and from there French and other European languages built the modern sense of a public disgrace. Romanian borrowed the word wholesale during its nineteenth-century wave of French vocabulary and did not adapt its shape beyond normal spelling.
