Etymology

Romanian took "haos" from French "chaos", which itself came from Ancient Greek "χάος" (khaos). In Greek the word first meant a vast, gaping void, the formless state before the ordered universe existed. Only later did it come to mean disorder in the everyday sense used in Romanian today.
