Etymology

Expune comes from Latin exponere, a combination of ex (out) and ponere (to put). Romanian borrowed it as a learned word, alongside the inherited native verb a pune, which also descends from ponere but through everyday speech rather than formal borrowing. Because of this double path, Romanian ended up with two related verbs: the plain a pune and the more formal expune.
