Etymology
Oprire is a deverbal noun built from the verb a opri ("to stop") plus the noun-forming suffix -re, the same pattern that turns a citi ("to read") into citire ("reading"). Romanian dictionaries trace a opri to a Slavic source, close to Bulgarian oприрам (opiram), "to lean on, hold back." Because oprire is a native formation rather than a Latin inheritance, it has no direct cognates in French or Italian.
