Etymology
Romanian borrowed "imunitate" from French "immunité" during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize the language after centuries of Slavic and Ottoman influence. The French word itself descends from Latin "immunitas," built on "immunis," meaning exempt from public duty. That adjective joins the negative prefix "in-" to "munus," a term for a public service, office, or gift.
