Etymology
Romanian borrowed "set" directly from French and English in the twentieth century, keeping the original spelling and a plain sense of a matching group of items. The same word was later reused for a segment of a tennis or volleyball match, following the sport's English terminology. English "set" itself descends from Old English settan, the causative form of sittan ("to sit"), so at its root the word once meant "to make something sit in place."
