Etymology
Soț comes from the Latin socius, meaning companion, ally, or partner. In Romanian the word narrowed over time to mean specifically a marriage partner, and it now means husband, with soție as its feminine counterpart for wife. The same Latin root, kept broader in meaning, gave other Romance languages words for business partner or member.
