Etymology
Romanian "general" entered the language in the 19th century, borrowed from French "général", itself from Latin "generalis", meaning pertaining to a whole class or kind. This was part of a broad wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary and pushed out older Slavic and Ottoman military terms. The noun sense, a high-ranking army officer, developed from the adjective, since such an officer commands the whole army rather than one unit.
