Etymology
Soi entered Romanian from Ottoman Turkish during the centuries of Ottoman political and commercial influence in the Balkans. The Turkish word soy means lineage, descent, or race, and Romanian narrowed and broadened this at once: it kept the sense of stock or pedigree but applied it widely to plants, animals, and goods. The same Turkish word spread into other Balkan languages through the same historical contact, which is why close relatives show up outside the Romance family.
