Capră descends directly from Latin capra, meaning she-goat, the feminine form of caper. Romanian kept the word almost unchanged through thirteen centuries of spoken Latin in the region. The extended senses, a sawhorse and a gymnastics vaulting horse, both come from the same image: a wooden frame propped up on legs like an animal.
