Etymology
The verb a trăi ("to live") did not inherit Latin vivere, which Romanian lost. Dictionaries usually trace it to a South Slavic source, comparing it with Bulgarian трая (traya, "to last, endure"). The exact path is debated among etymologists, so treat the Slavic link as probable rather than certain. Trăit is simply the past participle of this verb, used both to build compound past tenses and as an adjective meaning "lived through."
