Etymology

Stăpână is the feminine form of stăpân, master or owner. Romanian borrowed stăpân from a South Slavic source close to Old Church Slavonic and Bulgarian stopanin, meaning householder or landlord. The feminine suffix -ă was then added to build stăpână.
