Etymology

Romanian borrowed "sud" from French "sud" in the nineteenth century, during the wave of French and Italian loans that reshaped Romanian's learned and technical vocabulary. French "sud" itself came from Old English or Old Norse forms related to "south," carried into French through medieval maritime and trade contact. The word replaced or sits alongside the older native term "miazăzi" for the same meaning.
