Etymology

Supărat is the past participle of the verb a supăra, used as an adjective. A supăra comes from Latin superare, which meant to surpass or to overcome. Over time in Romanian the sense narrowed from overcoming someone to getting the better of their mood, and then to upsetting or bothering them. The participle supărat came to mean simply upset or angry.
