Etymology
Romanian "a cerceta" comes from Latin "circitare," a frequentative verb meaning to go around or make rounds, itself built on "circare" (to go about) and ultimately "circus" (circle, ring). The sense shifted from physical circling to the figurative idea of going over something repeatedly, which became examining or investigating. This is a case of inherited Latin vocabulary surviving directly into Romanian, rather than a later borrowing.
