Etymology
Rugăm is the first person plural present of a ruga, inherited from the Latin verb rogare, meaning to ask or to request formally. Romanian kept the plain sense of asking or begging, while the reflexive form a se ruga narrowed over time to mean praying. The same Latin root reached English indirectly, through French and Latin borrowings built on rogare rather than through Romanian.
